This very beautifully carved chimneypiece is a tour de force in Spencer and Richman’s repertoire.

The frieze panel depicts a mythological scene of music and dance. On the left is a piper, and on the right a drummer, while the central group of four maidens link hands in shimmering, diaphanous revelry.

Flanking the frieze, half size Canovian maidens maintain a distant overview, surmounted on finely moulded semi-circular plinths.
